Long John Baldry was, in British parlance, a one-off. There
never was anybody like him. When he died in July he left a legacy of great music
over a 45-year career (half of it based in Canada), the credit for discovering
Rod Stewart and naming Elton John, some classic records, and dozens of tales
as tall as he was. To celebrate his music-filled life, a group of Toronto musicians
who knew him, played with him, and loved his music will pay a musical tribute
to this legend.
Taking part are Danny Brooks and Papa John King (the latter,
John's guitarist for numerous tours), Mr. Rick & The Biscuits, who will
mark the skiffle phase of John's early career; one-time The Beatles keyboard
player, Roy Young; Greg Godovitz, a long-time friend; and John Dickie and The
Mississippi Hippies, who were slated to back Baldry up on the tour that was
cancelled when he was forced into intensive care last April.
Proceeds from the event will go to the John Baldry Memorial Fund at Vancouver
General Hospital. [presented by Richard Flohil].
